What is the lymphatic system?
Your lymphatic system is your body's drainage network. It's a web of vessels and nodes that collects excess fluid from your tissues, filters it, and returns it to your bloodstream. It also plays a big part in your immune system.
Unlike your blood, which has your heart pumping it round, lymph has no pump of its own. It moves mainly when your muscles contract, when you breathe deeply, and when you move about. That's why fluid can build up when you've been sitting for hours, flying, sleeping badly or eating a salty meal, and you wake up or finish the day feeling puffy.
What happens in a lymphatic massage?
Forget the deep, kneading pressure of a sports massage. Lymphatic drainage massage is gentle on purpose. Lymph vessels sit just under the skin, so the therapist uses light, slow, rhythmic strokes that gently stretch the skin in the direction lymph naturally flows, towards the lymph nodes.
A typical treatment looks like this:
- A quick consultation about your health, any medication and what you'd like to get out of it.
- Clearing first. The therapist usually starts near the neck and collarbones, where lymph drains back into the bloodstream, to "open the way".
- Working outwards. Slow, repetitive strokes move across the face, body or legs, always guiding fluid towards the nearest nodes.
- Rest and water. You'll be encouraged to take your time getting up and to have a glass of water.
Most sessions last 45 to 75 minutes. It's so calming that plenty of people drift off on the couch.
What can it do for you?
The main thing people notice is less puffiness, and that's the benefit with the most behind it. Here's what clients most often book it for:
- A less puffy face. Great for morning puffiness, tired-looking eyes and a softer-looking jawline. Many people see a difference straight after.
- Lighter-feeling legs and ankles. Especially after long days on your feet, travel or hot weather.
- Deep relaxation. The slow, repetitive rhythm is incredibly calming, and many clients say they sleep better that night.
- A brighter, fresher look. Skin often looks more awake and glowy afterwards.
What it won't do: it isn't a weight-loss treatment, and it won't "flush toxins" out of a healthy body. Your liver and kidneys already handle that. Any slimming effect is down to reduced fluid, so it's temporary. Regular sessions alongside moving more, drinking water and cutting back on salt give the best results.
Medical lymphatic drainage (MLD) is also used by specially trained therapists to help manage conditions like lymphoedema. That's a clinical treatment and should be arranged through your GP or a specialist.
Who is it for?
Lymphatic massage suits most people who want to feel lighter, less puffy and more relaxed. It's a lovely choice if you:
- Wake up puffy or retain fluid easily
- Spend long days sitting or standing
- Travel a lot or have just come off a long flight
- Want a calming treatment that isn't deep or painful
Please check with your GP before booking if you have:
- A blood clot or a history of DVT
- A heart condition or heart failure
- Kidney problems
- Cancer, or are having cancer treatment
- An active infection, fever or acute inflammation
- Recently had surgery
- A pregnancy (let us know so we can advise)
We'll always ask about your health before your treatment, so we can make sure it's right for you.
Aftercare: getting the most from your treatment
- Drink water. Stay well hydrated for the rest of the day.
- Keep moving. A gentle walk helps keep lymph flowing.
- Go easy on salt and alcohol for 24 hours, as both encourage fluid retention.
- Expect to need the loo more. That's completely normal.
- Book regularly. Results build over time. Many clients come every 1 to 2 weeks to start, then monthly to maintain.
Your questions answered
Does lymphatic massage hurt? Not at all. The pressure is very light, so it feels soothing rather than intense.
How soon will I see results? Many people notice less puffiness, especially in the face, straight after a session. Longer-lasting results come with regular treatments.
How often should I have it? Every 1 to 2 weeks is a good starting point, then monthly once you're happy with the results.
Can I have it on my face only? Yes. A facial lymphatic massage targets puffiness around the eyes, cheeks and jaw, and pairs beautifully with a facial.
Will it help me lose weight? No. It can reduce fluid retention, so you may look and feel lighter, but it doesn't burn fat.
